How to Track Competitor App Ads on Meta and TikTok

7 min read

If you run UA for a mobile app you already check competitor ads. The question is whether your process tells you anything beyond "they are running ads", which every advertiser is, all the time, including the ones losing money on every install.

The free route: Meta Ad Library

Meta Ad Library is genuinely useful and free, and any competitor research should start there. You can search by advertiser, filter by country, and see every active ad tied to a Facebook Page.

The catch is the search key: you need the Page name, not the app name. A studio with three apps might run all of them off one corporate Page, or split them across Pages that do not obviously map to the app you are watching. Without the Page you are guessing at brand-name variations.

Even with the right Page, things are missing:

App attribution is not structured. You see the creative and the landing destination, but no field says "this ad promotes App X". You infer it from the screenshot or store link, one ad at a time.

No aggregate longevity or testing view. An individual ad has a "started running on" date buried in its details, but nothing ranks a competitor's ads by survival time or shows how many variants of one concept are live. Building that picture means opening every ad, noting dates, and rechecking next week.

Country detail is EU-only. Outside the EU, DSA transparency does not apply, so you get "active" without the country-level reach and spend breakdown.

None of this makes the tool useless. It makes it a lookup tool rather than a tracking tool. It answers "what does this advertiser have live right now" well. It does not answer "what is working for them" without manual effort repeated over time.

The free route: TikTok Creative Center

Creative Center's Top Ads dashboard is built for creative inspiration and trend discovery, browsable by industry, region and objective. It is not an index of one competitor's account.

No reliable advertiser search. Top Ads surfaces what is trending in aggregate, not everything a given advertiser runs. A mid-size competitor may not surface at all regardless of spend.

No app-to-ad linking. Same gap as Meta.

No persistence tracking. You see what is trending now, not how long an ad has been live or how many variants exist.

TikTok's Commercial Content Library, a separate EU-focused transparency tool, does allow advertiser search, but its usefulness outside EU-targeted ads is limited and it is a different product with its own flow.

Why longevity and variant count are the signal

This is the part worth teaching properly, because it separates browsing ads from doing research.

Performance advertisers kill underperforming creative fast. If a growth team runs on CPI or ROAS targets, and most serious app UA does, an ad that is not converting gets cut within days because it burns budget against a number someone is accountable for. An ad still live after two or three weeks has survived that filter. That is not a guess that it works; it is a byproduct of how performance budgets get managed.

Variant count adds the second half. Five or six ads from one advertiser with the same core hook and value proposition, differing in opening, actor and caption, is not a scattergun. That is a team that found a converting angle and is iterating on the wrapper to fight creative fatigue while keeping the idea that already proved itself. A single long-running ad tells you something survived. A cluster of variants tells you they have committed budget to scaling it.

The honest caveat: not every long-running ad is a performance winner. Brand and awareness campaigns, especially from well-funded apps in a launch push, can run for weeks regardless of direct-response metrics. Treat longevity as a strong prior, not a certainty, and weigh it against what you know about the advertiser.

This is also why impression counts and ad likes are weaker signals than they look. Those are inflated by reach, not by whether the ad is profitable for whoever pays for it. Longevity and variant count are closer to revealed preference: budget owners voting with continued spend.

Apptonic pulls live ads from Meta and TikTok and resolves the app-to-advertiser link automatically, so you open an app and see the creatives running for it, how long each has been live and how many variants are in test, without needing the Page name first.

A repeatable weekly workflow

  1. List five to ten real competitors โ€” similar audience and monetisation model, not just similar category.
  2. Check what is live and how long the longest-running ads have persisted.
  3. Group creatives by concept rather than by individual ad, and note where variant clusters are growing week over week.
  4. Flag anything live for three or more weeks with multiple variants. That is your shortlist, not the full feed.
  5. Repeat weekly. One snapshot tells you what is live today; a cadence tells you what is surviving.

Frequently asked

Do I need to know a competitor's Facebook Page name to find their ads?
On Meta Ad Library, yes. Search is Page-based, so you need the right Page or a close guess. Tools that link ads to the app directly skip that step because the app-to-advertiser relationship is already resolved.
Is a long-running ad always a winning ad?
Usually, for performance-driven advertisers, because underperforming creative gets cut fast to protect CPI and ROAS targets. It is a weaker signal for brand campaigns that run on fixed budgets regardless of direct response, so weigh it against what you know about the advertiser's growth model.
Can I see which country a competitor's ads are targeting?
On Meta, detailed country-level reach and spend data is only available for EU-targeted ads under DSA transparency rules. Outside the EU you mostly see that an ad is active, not its full targeting breakdown. TikTok's transparency tooling has similar EU-focused limits.
