Apptonic vs Foreplay

Foreplay is an ad creative swipe file, competitor ad tracker and creative production workflow.

Foreplay is a good product aimed at a slightly different job, and the difference is structural rather than a feature gap.

Foreplay is built around the brand. Discovery has a Brands tab you search by competitor, Spyder tracks a brand's ads continuously, and everything is saved into boards and tags that you organise. Their own numbers put the Discovery library at over 100 million ads, human-curated rather than bot-scraped, and Lens gives first-party creative performance analytics benchmarked against 30,000+ advertisers. There is no equivalent to Lens here.

This product is built around the app. Every ad, creator and video is joined to a specific App Store or Google Play listing and scored by confidence, so you open an app and see what is running for it without needing to know the advertiser's page name first. That join is the whole point, and it is also the reason store data, install estimates and creator profiles exist here and not there.

Worth being precise, because it is easy to overstate: Foreplay is not ecommerce-only. Mobile apps and gaming is one of six verticals they serve, with a dedicated page and app logos on it. The accurate statement is that they serve app marketers with brand-level ad tooling, not that they ignore apps.

Side by side

CapabilityApptonicForeplay
Ads joined to the specific app they promoteYes. Confidence-scored per ad; search by app, not by page nameNo. Organised by brand, advertiser and board. Nothing on their public pages describes joining an ad to an App Store or Google Play listing
Ad longevity and variant count surfacedYes. Days live and variants in test, per advertiserPartly. Spyder keeps a brand's ads permanently, which lets you see what persists, but longevity is not presented as a ranked signal
Ad library sizeNo. Smaller, and scoped to app advertisersYes. Their strength โ€” over 100 million ads in Discovery, described as human-saved rather than scraped
Networks coveredPartly. Meta and TikTokYes. Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube, though Spyder tracking is Meta-only
Organic creator postsYes. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, matched to the appPartly. Discovery lists TikTok organic content as a filterable source. Instagram and YouTube organic are not stated

App store data โ€” installs, revenue, ratingsYes. Estimates by store, twelve-month historyNo. No app store dataset is mentioned anywhere public, including on their mobile apps vertical page

Creative briefs and production workflowNo. Not offeredYes. Briefs handles AI briefs and storyboarding for production

Pricing

When Foreplay is the better choice

  • You are producing creative at volume and need briefs, boards, tagging and a shared workflow โ€” that is what Foreplay is actually for, and it is better at it.
  • You want performance analytics on your own creative with benchmarks against other advertisers. Lens does this; we do not.
  • You want the largest curated swipe file you can get. Over 100 million ads beats anything scoped to app advertisers.
  • You work across verticals โ€” ecommerce, B2B, info products โ€” not only apps.
  • You need agency features: multiple seats, client boards, a Chrome extension, a public API.

When Apptonic fits better

  • You start from an app rather than from a brand, and you do not already know the advertiser's page name.
  • You need the organic side as well as the paid side, joined to the same app.
  • You need to find and contact the creators themselves, not just archive their content.
  • You want install and revenue context next to the creative, so you can tell whether the ads are working.
  • You want to look before paying. Browsing is free here; Foreplay starts at $59/month after a 7-day trial.

Frequently asked

Is this a Foreplay alternative?
For app marketers doing competitor research, largely yes โ€” with the difference that ads here are joined to the app they promote rather than to the advertiser. For creative production workflow, briefs and creative performance analytics, no: Foreplay does those and we do not.
How much does Foreplay cost?
Their published pricing starts at $59 per month for Basic, $175 for Workflow and $459 for Agency, dropping to $49, $149 and $389 on annual billing. There is no free plan, but there is a 7-day free trial.
Does Foreplay cover TikTok?
Yes for ads, and it lists TikTok organic content as a source in Discovery. Note that Spyder, their continuous competitor tracking, is Meta-only according to their own description.

We wrote this, so read it with that in mind. Everything stated about Foreplay was checked against their own public pages on and is marked as undisclosed where they do not publish it. Their product changes without telling us, so check Foreplay before deciding. Found something wrong? Tell us and we will fix it.
